British Airways Engineering Wales (BAEW) recently completed a successful main landing gear replacement on a Boeing 777-200 utilizing the LGX MultiSystem, the fully electric, ground-based landing gear change solution from RH Aero Systems.
Cardiff, Wales – September 20.2025 – British Airways Engineering Wales (BAEW) successfully executed a main landing gear swap on a Boeing 777-200 with the LGX MultiSystem, RH Aero Systems’ all-electric, ground-based gear change equipment. Conducted during the aircraft's heavy maintenance check including a periodic landing gear change, this operation represents the inaugural use of the LGX MultiSystem on a 777.
Only two technicians were required to complete the task: one engineer monitored the gear and handled the removal and installation of the trunnion pins, while a second operated the advanced hand-held control panel. Conventionally, this procedure demands a crew of at least six qualified staff to stabilize the gear, direct the crane, and manage the pins. Since the LGX MultiSystem fully supports and aligns the gear from the hangar floor, BAEW was able to perform the task securely and efficiently
For trial purposes the Main Landing Gear was extracted and reinstalled without the side and drag stays attached.
The engineering team at BAEW highlighted the enhanced safety provided by the new equipment. By keeping the MLG firmly clamped in the cradle during the entire process, the gear stayed perfectly stationary, preventing the dangerous lateral swinging often experienced when suspending a heavy leg from a conventional sling.
Continuous load-cell data displayed on the LGX control tablet verified that bearing loads remained strictly within Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) limits throughout the swap. This real-time feedback gave the maintenance team greater confidence and eliminated the usual need for continuous verbal communication between crane operators and spotters.
Recognized as the industry's premier universal landing gear change solution for wide-body jets, the LGX MultiSystem can be transported on a single standard freight pallet. It offers full compatibility with the Airbus A330, A340, A350, and A380 series, alongside Boeing 777 and 787 models. By removing the reliance on overhead cranes and elevated work platforms, the system effectively shortens turnaround times, decreases labour demands, and boosts hangar safety.
